Thank you 1820, for introducing elastic to our culture. I mean, seriously could you imagine life with out it? Underwear or socks or pantyhose? OK, maybe pantyhose is a bad example, because they are just horrible in any century. But, what about ponytail holders? Society would be so different without elastic.
Elastic is the key ingredient to a wedding garter, allowing most to be one-size-fits-all. I have, however, seen plus and petite sized wedding garters. As a general rule, if it doesn't clearly say what size it is, then it is a one-size-fits-all wedding garter.

Wedding garters are supposed to be worn just above your knee on either leg. If yours is a little loose above your knee, you can pull it up higher or vice versa. (For more on this garter placement, check out this advice post on where to wear your garter on your leg.)
Your wedding garter should fit snugly so that it won't fall down, but not so tight that it leaves a mark or cuts off circulation. You are going to be wearing your wedding garter for several hours and depending on when/if you do a wedding garter toss, you might be doing some dancing with it on. Your garter should fit you properly and be comfortable. Once you put your garter on and place it where you want it, you shouldn't even know that it is there. (Yes, I've tried on and worn several of my stylish wedding garters for hours on end!!)
Some wedding garters are adjustable. From what I've seen, you need to be careful with adjustable garters. Most adjustable garters don't have enough elastic or a firm enough tie to hold up for any length of time, especially under a heavy, hot dress. Just make sure that the adjustable part fits you snug enough so that the garter won't fall down. Be sure to move around in the adjustable garter to see how it holds up when you are walking and moving, instead of just standing.
Which brings up another point: heat. Under all that material, it can get seriously hot under your wedding dress. Even in the winter or the air conditioning, there isn't enough air flow to keep you cool under that gown. Your wedding garter should be made of high quality material so that it doesn't rub or chafe if you sweat.
Wearing your wedding garter just above your knee will also curb the "chub rub" friction that sometimes happens farther up your leg. Sorry to be so graphic, but unless you are one of the women who I admire/hate because your thighs don't touch, well then you will know exactly what I'm talking about!
