Your mom's wedding dress might have been sitting in a closet for decades, but that doesn't mean it has to stay there! If you've been wondering what to do with your mother's wedding dress because you don't want to wear it yourself, there are so many creative ways to give that sentimental gown a fashionable new life. From custom bridal purses and wedding morning robes to lace-covered sneakers, modern bridal jackets, and reception dresses, your mother's wedding dress can become something completely different. You can take the lace, satin, tulle, buttons, and other meaningful details from her original gown and turn them into bridal fashion that feels like you. At The Garter Girl and for more than 20 years, I've helped brides transform family wedding dresses into meaningful wedding heirlooms. While I specialize in custom wedding garters and other keepsakes, I love seeing all the creative ways brides incorporate family wedding dresses into their own bridal style. Ahead in this wedding planning advice post, I'm sharing seven modern ways to repurpose your mother's wedding dress into bridal fashion, including which materials work best for each idea and what to consider before having something custom made. 1. Turn Your Mother's Wedding Dress Into a Bridal Purse or Clutch A custom bridal purse might be one of the most fashionable ways to repurpose your mother's wedding dress. Imagine carrying a beautiful satin clutch made from the same fabric your mom wore down the aisle! A bridal purse can be made using satin from the original wedding dress skirt, lace from the bodice, or even special buttons and embellishments. You can go completely vintage-inspired with a delicate lace handbag or choose a modern, structured clutch with just a small detail from Mom's dress. I especially love this idea because a bridal purse isn't something you have to wear only on your wedding day. You could carry it to your rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, wedding reception, or even for special occasions long after you're married. What wedding dress materials work best? Satin, silk, and other sturdy fabrics are wonderful for creating the body of a bridal clutch. Vintage lace, appliqués, pearls, and buttons can be incorporated as decorative details. If the original fabric is fragile, a designer may be able to use it as an accent over a new, stronger material. Make a Wedding Morning Robe From Your Mother's Wedding Dress Your wedding morning is full of special little moments, and wearing a bridal robe made from your mother's wedding dress is such a beautiful way to include her in those memories. Instead of buying a traditional getting-ready bridal robe, consider having one custom made using the satin, silk, or lace from Mom's wedding gown. A flowing satin robe with vintage lace around the sleeves or neckline would be gorgeous for getting-ready photographs. Or, if you prefer something simple and modern, a designer could create a minimalist robe using the original wedding dress fabric with just a few sentimental details. And here's something else I love about this idea: You can wear your custom robe again! It doesn't have to disappear into a box after your wedding. What wedding dress materials work best? Lightweight satin, silk, and soft lace are ideal for bridal robes. Wedding dresses with full skirts or long trains may provide enough material for a robe, while smaller pieces of lace can be added to a new robe as trim or decorative details. Heavily beaded or stiff fabrics are generally better used as accents rather than for the entire garment. Create a Modern Bridal Veil Using Lace From Mom's Wedding Dress If your mother's wedding dress has beautiful lace but the overall style isn't quite right for you, a custom bridal veil might be the perfect solution. Instead of wearing the entire vintage wedding gown, you can have the original lace carefully removed and incorporated into a new bridal veil. Think about a modern cathedral-length veil with a few delicate lace appliqués from your mom's dress along the bottom. Or a simple fingertip veil with vintage lace around the edges. You could even incorporate a small embroidered detail or a piece of lace near the veil comb, creating something meaningful without changing the overall look of your wedding day style. I particularly love this idea for brides who have already found their dream wedding dress but still want to wear something from their mother's wedding day. What wedding dress materials work best? Lace appliqués, embroidered motifs, and decorative lace trim work beautifully for custom bridal veils. A designer can attach these details to new bridal tulle, so you don't necessarily need large pieces of the original dress. The vintage lace does need to be strong enough to handle being removed and sewn onto the new veil. Make Custom Bridal Shoes With Lace From Your Mother's Wedding Dress Okay, this one is just fun! If you're planning to change into sneakers for your wedding reception or after-party, why not have a pair customized with lace from your mother's wedding dress? White bridal sneakers are already a popular alternative to traditional wedding shoes, but adding a little piece of Mom's dress makes them even more special. You could have lace flowers from her gown added to the sides of the sneakers, incorporate pearls or embellishments from the original dress, or add a small piece of lace near the heel. And if you're planning a fun wedding reception outfit with a short bridal dress or two-piece set, custom lace sneakers could be the perfect finishing touch. This is also a great idea if you don't have much usable fabric from your mother's wedding dress. You may only need a few small pieces of lace to create something completely different. What wedding dress materials work best? Lace appliqués, embroidered flowers, pearls, and small decorative details are ideal for customizing bridal sneakers. Lightweight lace generally works better than thick satin or heavy fabric, and the designer should use attachment methods suitable for the shoe material and regular movement. Turn Mom's Wedding Dress Into a Bridal Jacket, Wrap, or Cover-Up If your bridal style is a little more modern, consider turning your mother's wedding dress into a custom bridal jacket, wrap, or cover-up. I love the contrast of a traditional wedding dress being transformed into something unexpected, like a satin bridal bomber jacket! You could have a cropped jacket made from the satin of your mother's wedding dress, incorporate vintage lace into the sleeves of a modern bridal cover-up, or create a delicate wrap to wear over your wedding gown. A bridal jacket is also a fun option for your rehearsal dinner, reception, or after-party, especially if you want something that feels less traditional than a wedding dress. And don't overlook the original details! Buttons from the back of Mom's gown, embroidered lace, or a beautiful piece of satin from the skirt can make a custom jacket feel even more personal. What wedding dress materials work best? Satin, silk, and other stable fabrics are good candidates for structured bridal jackets. Soft lace and lightweight materials can work well for wraps, capelets, and cover-ups. A designer may need to incorporate new fabric, lining, or interfacing to give the finished piece the right shape. Redesign Your Mother's Wedding Dress Into a Rehearsal Dinner, Reception, or Bridal Shower Dress Who says your mother's wedding dress has to stay a wedding dress? One of the most creative ways to reuse a vintage wedding gown is to have it redesigned into a completely new outfit for another wedding event. Maybe you love the idea of wearing Mom's dress, but you also want to choose your own wedding gown for the ceremony. Or maybe the original dress has beautiful fabric, but the style is very 1980s and not quite what you had in mind. An experienced bridal seamstress may be able to shorten the dress into a modern mini, remove oversized sleeves, reshape the neckline, or redesign the skirt into something more contemporary. Imagine wearing a short dress made from your mother's wedding gown to your bridal shower. Or a modern satin cocktail dress for your rehearsal dinner. You could even transform the gown into a second look for your wedding reception or after-party. I've actually worked with a bride who did something very similar! She contacted me about making a custom wedding garter using material from her mother's wedding dress. She didn't want to send me the entire gown, so she removed the large sleeves and sent those instead. But once the sleeves were gone, she realized that she loved the dress! She had it altered to fit her and wore her mother's wedding dress to her rehearsal dinner. Then, on her wedding day, she wore the custom heirloom garter I made using fabric from those same sleeves. I love that she found a way to wear her mother's wedding dress AND have her own wedding gown. She didn't have to choose between the two. What wedding dress materials work best? Dresses with substantial amounts of usable satin, silk, lace, or tulle can offer more redesign possibilities. The original gown's construction and condition matter, so it's important to work with a bridal alterations specialist who has experience transforming vintage wedding dresses rather than simply shortening or resizing them. Turn Your Mother's Wedding Dress Into a Detachable Skirt or Two-Piece Bridal Outfit If you love the idea of modern bridal separates, consider using your mother's wedding dress to create a detachable skirt or two-piece bridal outfit. This is an especially interesting option if Mom's wedding dress has a full skirt with lots of satin or tulle. A designer might be able to transform the original skirt into a modern bridal overskirt that you wear over your wedding gown for the ceremony and remove for the reception. Or you could have a separate bridal skirt made from the vintage fabric and pair it with a contemporary corset top, lace blouse, or simple bridal bodysuit. I also love the idea of creating a shorter skirt for your rehearsal dinner or bridal shower. You can incorporate something sentimental into your bridal wardrobe without trying to recreate your mother's entire wedding look. And if the original gown has beautiful lace around the hem, that detail could become a stunning feature of the new skirt. What wedding dress materials work best? Full skirts, satin, tulle, and substantial lengths of lace offer the most flexibility for bridal separates. The designer will need to evaluate how much fabric is available, whether the original material can be cut into a new pattern, and whether additional fabric is needed to complete the outfit. Here's something I always tell brides who are thinking about having their mother's wedding dress transformed into something new: Before you use all of the fabric, consider saving a small piece for a custom wedding garter. That's my specialty! For more than 20 years, I've personally designed and hand-sewn custom wedding garters using materials from mothers' and grandmothers' wedding dresses, bridal veils, and other meaningful family pieces. And the best part is that you often don't need much fabric. A small piece of lace from a sleeve, a bit of satin from the hem, or even a special button may be enough to create a personalized heirloom wedding garter. That means you can have a beautiful bridal purse made from your mother's wedding dress and still save a little material for a garter to wear on your wedding day. If you'd like more ideas for smaller heirlooms, I've put together a separate guide featuring five meaningful ways to repurpose your mother's wedding dress into custom wedding accessories and keepsakes. First, take a good look at the condition of the dress. Vintage wedding fabrics can be fragile, particularly if the gown has been stored for decades. Some areas might have stains or tears, while other sections are still in beautiful condition. Next, decide which details you want to preserve. Maybe it's the lace from the sleeves, the buttons down the back, or the satin from the skirt. Knowing what matters most will help you and your designer decide how to use the materials. And here's a big one: Think about everything you want to make before anyone starts cutting. If you're planning to have a bridal purse made and also want a custom wedding garter, make sure both designers know what you're hoping to create. That way, you can set aside the materials needed for each project. You'll also want to ask whether the designer accepts customer-supplied wedding dress materials, how much fabric they need, and whether they'll return anything left over. I know it can feel overwhelming to cut into something as sentimental as your mother's wedding dress. But you don't have to do it yourself. When I work with brides on custom wedding garters and heirloom keepsakes, many send me the entire dress, and I handle the cutting and return the unused materials. The most important thing is finding someone experienced who understands that these aren't just ordinary pieces of fabric. They're part of your family's history. Depending on the condition and construction of the original gown, a bridal seamstress may be able to transform it into a rehearsal dinner dress, bridal shower outfit, reception dress, detachable skirt, or other modern bridal fashion piece. What can I make from an old wedding dress besides a garter? You can repurpose an old wedding dress into a bridal purse, clutch, wedding morning robe, custom veil, bridal sneakers, jacket, wrap, reception dress, or two-piece outfit. Some projects use large sections of the original gown, while others require only a small piece of lace or satin. Can I make multiple things from my mother's wedding dress? Absolutely, depending on how much usable material is available. For example, you might have a bridal clutch made from the satin skirt, a custom veil created with lace from the bodice, and a wedding garter made from leftover fabric. Discuss all your plans with the designers before cutting into the gown. What if my mother's wedding dress is too old or damaged to wear? Even if a vintage wedding dress isn't suitable to wear, some of its lace, satin, buttons, or embellishments may still be usable for smaller bridal accessories. A designer experienced with heirloom materials can help determine which sections are suitable. Do I need to cut my mother's wedding dress before sending it to a designer? Not necessarily. Some designers accept entire wedding dresses and select the materials they need for the project. Always ask about their process, shipping requirements, and whether unused materials will be returned. Give Your Mother's Wedding Dress a Fashionable New Life Your mother's wedding dress doesn't have to look exactly the way it did on her wedding day to be meaningful on yours. Whether you turn her gown into a custom bridal purse, a wedding morning robe, a modern veil, or a completely redesigned rehearsal dinner dress, there are so many creative ways to repurpose a vintage wedding dress into something that fits your personal bridal style.
